Hemmingway code hero and relationships

Indian camp:

The father and son relationship:

Nick admires his father and seems very close to him. Nick trust his father, and he feels safe and secure, while they are together. In my opinion the trip is an educational trip for Nick, who gets an insight in “real life” issues such as life and death.
Nick trust his father, and the trip to the Indian land, maybe is a sort of identity building trip. The son also has big trust in the father; he believes that he can save the Indian woman no matter what.

Code Hero:
In the story, Nick Adams' father, a country doctor, has been summoned to an Indian camp to deliver a baby, with Nick and his uncle going along with him. At the camp, the father is forced to perform an emergency caesarean section using a jack-knife, with Nick as his assistant. Afterward, the woman's husband is discovered dead, having fatally slit his throat during the operation.
The father has to perform a heroic act so in that way he can be seen as the code hero.

A Farewell to Arms:

Relationships:

The romance between Frederic and Catherine in A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway parallels humanity's struggle between superstition and religion. Their relationship starts merely as a façade based on physical attraction, but quickly grows into a deeper love. At its commencement, Frederic and Catherine feel the need for something substantial.
When Frederic meets Catherine he finds her to be very beautiful and at first the relationship between them consists of a game based on his attempts to seduce her. He does try to make one attempt to try to kiss her, but Catherine becomes very offended and quickly slaps him on the face. Frederic learns from very early on that Catherine had lost her fiancé, who was killed during the war. Catherine is still rather shaken up from the experience and is not ready to really get into another relationship. Frederic has no intention of ever falling in love with her.

The Hero

Group 1:
Although Ernest Hemingway's heroes have different names they are fundamentally the same person, drawing from the same traumatizing experiences.
What Hemingway finds to be important and hero-like is the achievement of
Self-redemption. Harry finds his Self-redemption, through the confrontation with old memories, and in the culmination of his poor choices. He finally is confronted with his own mortality, and enters the state of a “Hemingway Hero”.
On important influence on the story, was that Hemingway had a fear of dying without finishing his work.

“If you have to go away” she said, “it is absolutely necessary to kill of everything you eave behind? I mean do you have to take away everything? Do you have to kill your horse, and your wife and burn your saddle and your armour?
“Yes” He said.

In our opinion this quote emphasizes the fact that he finds self-redemption. Here he turns down all the basics of his life with his wife, as a state in the meeting of his mortality.

Group 4 - The wife / heroine?

Questions
  1. In which way does Hemingway leave his mark on her character?
  2. Do you think she’s a heroine? Argue for your answer.
  3. How come she keeps asking him if he promises not to destroy her again?

Harry in Sweden/Hemingway Hero

Harry in Sweden
"A man who lives correctly, following the ideals of honor, courage and endurance in a world that is sometimes chaotic, often stressful, and always painful." This is how Hemingway describes the Hemingway hero. Typically the Hemingway hero doesn’t show emotions to women, because this would show him as a weak man. The Hemingway heroes are therefore often adventuresome and brave. Hemingway heroes always seem to have some hope guiding them into the future.

He is a Hemingway hero

He travels and is adventuresome. He has a lot of flashbacks from different countries; Austria, Africa, (USA), France and Turkey.
At the end of his life he is very introspective.
Hemingway heroes or some of their relatives often dies in his stories. This can be proven by he is dying in the end.
Harry is a killermachine, you can see this in the text “Africa was where we had been happiest […] they had made this safari with the minimum of comfort. There was no hardship; but there was no luxury…” This quote shows that he is an adventuresome and a brave man, which isn’t afraid of challenges.
He is being honest to her and direct to her. He is not lying to her to satisfy her. “”Your damned money was my armor. My swift and my armor””Don’t””All right. I’ll stop that. I don’t want to hurt you.””It’s a little bit late now”” All right then. I’ll go hurting you. It’s more amusing.”” Here you can se that on his deathbed he wants to be honest to her.

He isn’t a Hemingway hero

“She shot very well this good, this rich bitch…” this quote shows him as an anti-hero and not a gentleman.
“Don’t pay any attention, darling, to what I say. I love you, rally. You know I love you. I’ve never loved anyone else the way I love you. […] He slipped into the familiar lie he made his bread and butter by.” This shows him as a liar, even though he is showing emotions, then he is lying to her own wife.

Group 5 the relationship

Male point of view - His relationship to her:
“But his wife said ‘Who is that letter from, my dear?’ and that was the end of the beginning of that.” [page 11 line 13-14].

·       *   It can never be an ultimate relationship because his focus is materialized.

“Love is a dunghill” [page 5, in the middle]
“I have never loved anyone else the way I love you… He slipped into the familiar lie.” [Page 43, end]

Iceberg theory:  Seems perfect, but it is no way near
·         Sacrificed his talent by material pleasures offered by Helen.

“this rich bitch, this kindly caretaker and destroyer of his talent. Nonsense. He had destroyed his talent himself. Why should he blame this woman because she kept him well? He had destroyed his talent by not using it, by betrayals of himself and what he believed in, by drinking so much that he blunted the edge of his perceptions, by laziness, by sloth, and by snobbery, by pride and be prejudice, by hook and by crook. “

·         -  Self-knowledge

Female point of view - Her relationship to him:
Disaster relationship: - Her need for confirmation is not for filed.

“That’s not fair. I love you now. I’ll always love you. Don’t you love me? “.  “No, said the man. I don’t think so. I never have. ” [page 5, end]
“But his wife said ‘Who is that letter from, my dear?’ and that was the end of the beginning of that.” [page 11 line 13-14].

The relationship group 6

The relationship between the man and the wife

-          He can’t handle a rich man’s world where she comes from
-          He says all the time that he likes her, but it looks like that he doesn’t mean it
-          Self-centered and acts like a baby
-          It is not the ultimate relationship
o   Money?
o   Is it true love?
o   Maybe not mutual love?
o   Quote – “Your money was my armor…” (Page 43 – line middle)
o   Quote – “Do you love me? No, I don’t think so. I never did” (Page 41 – line middle)
o   He excuses himself to get away. Afterwards he shouts at her.
-          He takes his frustrations out of her. It is maybe because he is on his deathbed.
-          Through his flashbacks he said that he only wanted her for the money
o   Quote – “It was strange, too, wasn’t it, that when he fell in love with another woman, that woman should always have more money than the last one? (Page 45 – line 17-18)

3       Questions:

1.       Why do you think that he yells at her and afterwards excuses himself?
2.       Do you think he really cares about Helen?
3.       What is your own opinion about him?

Man killed by bush in Tanzania

The famous and respected writer Harry got himself killed on a safari in Tanzania when he got an infectious wound from a very dangerous Tanzanian shrub.

Harry and his wife, Helen, had left Paris to go on a safari in Tanzania. What started as a romantic journey for the couple turned out to be a fatal and life changing experience, where only one of them makes it back alive. Harry scratched his leg by a thorn, and the infection became gangrenous and eventually killed him after 16 days of pain and agony. Witnesses claimed that he was very delirious and confused as he was rambling on about past experiences. People say that his alcohol level was dangerously high, perhaps because he had been trying to doll his pain with alcohol.

Song - the snows of Kilimanjaro

Mel: In a basement... (I en kælder sort som kul)

Harry is in Africa.
He is on safari.
He is not in Chi’I’na
It is very sunny
He is taking pictures
Many many pictures
Wound from a thorn
Now he is worn

Now he is thinking back
He is getting sicker
He is almost off track
Not becoming thicker
Flashbacks comes now all the time
Now he’s unable to climb
He is very sad.
Life is getting bad!

Themes:
He wanted to achieve something
It was to write and not to sing.
Was complaining all his life.
And he didn’t love his wife
Did not live in the moment
He is very absent
‘cause now he is dead
And now it is too late.

The snows of Kilimanjaro - A true fairytale

Once upon a time there was a poor writer, who traveled around the world to find new stories to tell. On these trips he traveled from Constantinople to Paris and many other exotic countries. He experienced many things, both good and bad.
But there were some things, he never wrote about. Like that Christmas time, when the snow had blocked him and his companions in a house in Schrunz, and they played cards all the day long. And another time, when he saw a bomb destroying a town, and the panic spread. He was a soldier at that time, and was fighting a war.
One time he rode across a mysterious country, and then he saw a fine, but incredible drunk lady. Then he rode closer to her, he could see that she was a princess. Then he thought; A princess has a lot of money, I should just nail her. But instead of just that they became fond of each other, and they decided to take a trip to the House of God. But on the dangerous way, they came across an old Armenian slut. She gave him a bad disease. Now he is very sick, and is lying at the foot of the mountain. The disease is making him evil towards the princess, so she goes out to get some distance from him.
They are waiting for a miracle because he is very sick so he needs to get some help. He is dreaming that a swan comes and saves him but before they are able to leave Kilimanjaro, the swan crashes against the mountain and they die.
In the mean time his illness is getting worse and when the princess comes back he is dying. She is very sad and cries but it is too late and he is gone forever. THE END!!!!

Ernest Hemingway

Ernest Hemingway
Ernest Miller Hemingway was born in Oak Park, Illinois, he was an American writer. He mostly wrote short stories and novels and some of the themes he mentioned are the theme of women and death and existentialism. His fiction was successful because the characters he presented exhibited authenticity that resonated with his audience. He was one of the most imitated American writers; he wrote novels and short stories in a manner that came to characterize one pole of the modern fictional idiom. His language is laconic and spare. His plots are simple. The complexity of his fiction lies in its suggestiveness, in the implications of what is said and of what is left unspoken. Hemingway believed fiction should reveal less rather than more, like an iceberg with only its tip exposed above water. He referred to his style as the iceberg theory. The theory is: the meaning of a piece is not immediately evident, because the crux of the story lies below the surface, just as most of the mass of a real iceberg similarly lies beneath the surface. Hemingway had a distanced relationship with his mother.   His mother was a religious woman, active in church affairs, who led her son to play the cello and sing in the choir. Hemingway's early years were spent largely in fighting the feminine influence of his mother. Some claim that he hated his mother. He didn't attend her funeral when she died in June of 1951. Hate may have been a motivating factor in his decision not to go. In 1954 he won a Nobel Prize in literature. The Nobel Prize in Literature 1954 was awarded to Ernest Hemingway "for his mastery of the art of narrative, most recently demonstrated in The Old Man and the Sea, and for the influence that he has exerted on contemporary style".
