b.     Compare the movie and the book
                                                               -      What is different/ why…etc..
                                                               -      Comment on the themes
In the battle of the cowshed (first battle) a dog died instead of a sheep. It’s so Napoleon can take over its whelps.
The windmill is only destroyed once, when it’s blown up. It’s because the movie can’t have every detail that there’s in the book.
Boxer is against Napoleon and is one of the “good guys”. It’s to make it more simple so that smaller children are able to see it as well.
Benjamin is in the movie working with Boxer. ”. It’s to make it simpler so that smaller children are able to see it as well and to make him one of the “good guys”.
We don’t see Mr. Whimper trading with the other farms to get the right material to Animal Farm. It’s because the movie can’t have every detail that there’s in the book.
The ending is different. When the animals see the famous text (all equal but some more than others) a message is send to all the other animals. They come to help the animals on Animal farm and they end up succeeding in the rebellion. It’s to make a happy ending so it’s not only for grown-ups.
The Themes:
It’s about Stalin and the Russian revolution.
Russian Revolution and Animal Farm:
  1. What do you know about the Russian Revolution?
The Russian began in 1917. It replaced the Tsarist Aucrazy. Lenin became the leader of Russia after the Russian revolution and introduced communism.
  1. Who was Trotsky and what did he stand for?
Trotski was the mastermind behind the Russian revolution. Later he became one of the leading figures in the new Russia. He was educated but later he was expelled from Russia and assassinated in Mexico.
  1. Who was Stalin and what did he stand for?
He became the Russian leader after Lenin. He expelled and probably got Trotsky Assissaneted. He took power and became a dictator. He used propaganda to undermine his enemys and expelled and/or killed them like Trotsky.
  1. Look at the ’homework for 29th.” sheet. Do you agree with the analysis of Orwell’s message in Animal Farm?
Primary yes. It is a criticism against communism because the people with power become corrupted. I do however not think the book says anything about how to make a good system.
  1. Are all animals equal?
As a starting-point yes.
In animal farm all animals are however not treated as equals.
  1. Are human beings as different as Boxer and Moses and the other animals?
Yes humans are and behave very differently. Often though, they strive for something safe in their lives just like in animal farm.
  1. Why has Orwell chosen two horses to represent Mollie and Boxer?
The horses represent the working class. The working class was with great probability primary happy for the revolution though of course there were some who wasn’t.

Movie vs. Book:
The ending in the movie is very different form the one in the book.
In the book it ends with the pigs still in charge of animal farm but in the movie it ends with the other animals starting a riot against Napoleon and his villains. The reason for this is properly that the movie wishes to have a happy ending because it sells better. Many people like to see the good ones triumph.
This is the difference worth mentioning.

Themes:
The theme in the book/movie is a criticism of the communist regime in Russia. One could say that Animal Farm is a story with a moral message about the Communist Revolution and least of all the consequences. The communism is representing by the quote “All Animals are equal but some are more equal than others”.
In the book/movie the power, consider the pigs most and they lead the farm as Stalin lead the Soviet Union. Therefore, themes as confidence, greediness and selfishness are very characteristics from the book/movie. The overall theme throughout the book/movie Animal Farm must be corruption.

a.Write a review of the movie include a brief summary.

The movie Animal Farm is about animals taking over Manor Farm, which is a farm ruled by the constantly drunk Mr. Jones. The old pig, Old Major, gathers all the animals. He tells them to revolt against Jones and to take control of the farm for themselves, calling for a life of equality and prosperity. Old Major dies, but the revolution still succeeds. In the beginning the pigs, Napoleon and Snowball, are working together as a team with all the other animals. They make seven commandments to make sure that all animals are equal and free from the human beings. Throughout the movie they start fighting against each other to get the power themselves. After a while Napoleon chases Snowball away from the farm and a dictatorial community develops. Some of the commandments are being changed. The commandments now allow the animals (or some of the animals) to act more like humans.
Years later, Napoleon's plan has proven so successful that pigs in other farms have joined his cause. During a meeting of the pigs the donkey Benjamin realizes that the animals have been cheated on by the pigs. Benjamin starts a new revolution against the pigs, and in the end they defeat Napoleon and his killer-dogs. The dictatorship has come to an end, and a new life for the animals is to begin.

Comment on the themes:
The main theme in the story is freedom. All the animals wish to be free of suppression and bad conditions. To reach this freedom they start to live under their own new ideology – animalism. Animalism is in many ways the same as communism. There are many common elements from the old closed Russia and Animal Farm. For example the pig Napoleon, who takes the full control of the farm, and it show a way of this dictatorship.
Other themes could be dictatorship, communism, socialism, anarchism and The Russian Revolution.

Compare the movie and the book
                                                               -      What is different/ why…etc..
The story is compressed; the windmill is only destroyed once, a lot of animals aren’t mentioned (Clover doesn’t get mentioned).
The ending differs;
                                                                -      The book; the pigs are visited by humans, and Benjamin is unable to see difference between them.
                                                                -      The Movie; the pigs are visited by other pigs, who have taken control over their farms as well. The suppressed animals from the other farms gather and overthrow the evil pig regime.

                                                               -      Comment on the themes
Suppression and abuse of powerzz.
                                                                -      In the movie; the suppressed animals opposes the evil pig regime at the end.
                                                                -      In the book; the suppressed animals are unable to act and stand up against the evil pig regime.

17/01 - 2011 Opgave B.

  1. Make your own groups and complete one of the following task:
a)      Compare the movie and the book
What is different/ why…etc..
Like all books, Animal Farm, the book, is different from Animal Farm, the movie:

·         Some of the characters that were in the book were not in the movie. (Mr. Whymper, Clover, and Mollie)
·         Some of the events that were in the book were not shown or did not happen in the movie.
·         Squealer did not convince them to let the pigs use the apples and milk in their mash. (in the movie)
·         The ending (the book compared to the movie) :
-          After the finally power of the pigs, the animals decide to escape from the farm.
o   Fortunately they come back to with a strong feeling about destroying the pigs
-          Therefore they come back a few years later to a big final fight between the animals and the evil pigs.

The big final clash between the pigs and the suppressed animals, results in the finally freedom of the pigs - and therefore a happy ending.

 Comment on the themes:

There are a lot of themes and symbolism in the story. Of theme, which has to be mentioned is the ideology communism”
"ALL ANIMALS ARE EQUAL, BUT SOME ARE MORE EQUAL THAN OTHERS"
The pigs are pretending acting the communism, but they are in fact deeply greedy.
Therefore would a theme also be selfishness, confidence, greediness and empathy.
A leader has to have empathy – otherwise the people (animals) will make a rebellion.

Review

"Animal Farm" tells the simple and tragic story of what happens when the oppressed farm animal’s rebel, drive out Mr. Jones, the farmer, and attempt to rule the farm themselves, on an equal basis. What the animals seem to have aimed at was a utopian sort of communism, where each would work according to his capacity, respecting the needs of others. The venture failed, and "Animal Farm" ended up being a dictatorship of pigs, which were the brightest, and most idle of the animals. "Animal Farm" successfully presents how the mechanism of propaganda and brainwashing works in totalitarian regimes, by showing how the pigs could make the other animals believe practically anything. The novel and movie can be seen as the historical analysis of the causes of the failure of communism, or as a mere fairy-tale; in any case it tells a good story that aims to prove that human nature and diversity prevent people from being equal and happy or at least equally happy.

Blog
- An introduction to the new class-blog from our teacher.
This blog will be used to provide a summary of the module for any absent student.

Group work
- Answer question about about Animal Farm and the movie Christmas Carol. These questions have the intention to reflect about social classes, democracy and equal rights.
After answering the question: Comparing our answers with another group an post a summary on this blog.

chapter 9

It is a society where somebody has more rights and more power than the others. There is a ‘scale’ of importance that classifies groups of people according to their education and their chores.
In ‘A Chiristmas Carol’ the social division is based on money power: Ebenezer Scrooge is indeed rich and he can use his power on the poorest.
In animal farm, the pigs (the higher class) take utilization of the other hard working animals (lower class).
Then the other animals work hard to get a little share of food the pigs takes half of the share even though they haven’t worked for it.
The pigs exploit Boxer’s death by selling him for a case of whiskey. They don’t tell the other animals about this, and that makes it wrong.

Our society is based on democracy. All members of our society have identical rights. Every people have identical educational opportunity.

It is never totally possible to reach deep democracy: it is always necessary to have someone who administrates decisions for the community.
It is to say, though, that there are different ways of conceiving democracy.

  1. Explain what ‘a class divided society’ means. Compare class division in A Christmas Carol and Animal Farm.
A class divided society is a society where there is a wide gap between poor and rich. The divide could be both social, financial, racial or based on your level of education. You can compare Napoleon and Ebeneezer S. They are both members of the high-class society, while the other animals at the farm and the "working class" represents the low-class society.

  1. ”All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others.” With reference to humans rather than animals, how true is this of society today?
With reference to Danish society it is clear that everyone is equal but the Danes are more equal than the foreigners. If you look at general rights of the Danish people it is clearly not equal e.g. the new point system for family unification, the test foreigners have to pass to become a Danish citizen and the fact that foreigners do not have the same rights to get cash benefits.
We have rules and forms to ensure that all people are equal, but due to political systems and the divide between social clases, humans do not have the same opportunities in their lives.

  1. Is it possible for a society ever to be completely democratic? Justify your answer with reference to past and present social groups that you are familiar with.
No, no matter how democratic a country will be there will always be someone who is in charge and has more power than others. Someone has to be in control and decide for the sake of others – the question is then- how much should that person decide?
